Early
1980's:
Individual families caring for children with developmental
disabilities advocate the need for respite services and
develop a plan. |

September
1987:
- Respite Care of San Antonio opens on the campus
of Mission Road Developmental Center
- Respite care provides in-home services with funding
from the Texas Planning Council for Developmental
Disabilities
- Respite Care, with the help of Mission Road Developmental
Center, receives a planning grant from the United
Way of San Antonio and Bexar County.

1989:
Patti Teter becomes Respite Care’s energetic
and visionary Executive Director. |

Spring
1990:
Respite 500 Mini Grand Prix is established as a part
of the San Antonio Grand Prix Race. |

August
1993:
Cara Magrane joins the Respite team as Jesuit Volunteer-
the first of many giving young professionals who have
become a consistent and integral component of Respite
Care. |

December
1993:
Mother’s Day Out service opens at Trinity Baptist
Church, north of the central city. |
| |
November
1994:
Family Day Out services are provided every Saturday
at First Presbyterian Church in the central city. |
| |
November
1994:
“Un Tiempo Especial, Un Lugar Especial”
(“A Special Time, A Special Place”), an
enriched Mother's Day Out service, opens at Our Lady
of Guadalupe Church on the city’s west side. |

January
1995:
- A Capital Campaign is undertaken to establish
Texas’ first and only emergency crisis shelter
for children with disabilities.
- Respite Care offices move from Mission Road Developmental
Center to temporary space at the Northeast Independent
School District Building.
- Funding is secured from Ray Ellison Family Trust,
City of San Antonio, Texas Department of Housing
and Community Affairs, Community Development Block
Grant, Valero Energy, Housing and Urban Development,
Board of Directors and many friends.
- Parent’s Night Out opens at Laurel Heights
United Methodist Church.

March
1996:
A generous gift from the Davidson Family Charitable
Foundation secures the future of the shelter to be
named after the foundation. |

October
1997:
- Davidson Respite House is established
- RCSA offices settle into permanent location in
the carriage house of the Davidson Respite House
- An Endowment Fund is established to ensure the
future of Respite Care of San Antonio, Inc.

2000:
Respite Daycare opens at Christ Episcopal Church. |
| |
November
2000:
Mother’s Day Out opens at E.T. Dixon United
Methodist Church on San Antonio’s east side. |

May
2001:
The Medical Wellness Center opens at the Davidson
Respite House. |
| |
August
2001:
Providian Financial Group commits $100,000 to RCSA
to underwrite the Respite 500 for the next five years. |

November
2001:
- H-E-B commits $1million to the Endowment Fund
- Installation of the Angel Garden with the first
Angel in honor of H-E-B.

December
2001:
Bert Pfiester takes over the helm as RCSA’s
new Executive Director. |

September
2002:
Respite Care of San Antonio begins celebration of
its 15th Anniversary Year. |

February
2003:
RCSA forms a partnership with El Centro del Barrio
to enhance wellness services for the children of Respite
Care. |
| |
January 2003: Methodist Healthcare Ministries provides the funding to CentroMed to provide medical services to special needs children and school-age siblings. |
| |
May 2004: Respite Care was selected as the national charity of the year for 2003 by the PGA TOUR. |
| |
September 2005: Baptist Health Services Foundation provides a grant to provide additional medical services to the children of Respite Care. |
